Understanding our return policies and how to request a refund

Return Policy

406 Makers connects you with independent Montana artisans, and each seller sets their own return policy. However, we maintain standards to ensure a fair experience for all buyers.

General Guidelines

  • Most sellers accept returns within 14-30 days of delivery
  • Items must be in original, unused condition with tags attached
  • Return shipping costs are typically the buyer's responsibility unless the item was defective or incorrect
  • Direct-purchase personalized items may not be eligible for return once work has begun
  • Review the listing and seller policy carefully before ordering personalized work

Check Before You Buy

Each product listing displays the seller's return policy. Look for:

  • Return window (e.g., "30-day returns")
  • Conditions for returns
  • Whether exchanges are offered
  • Any non-returnable item exceptions

Tip: Save the original packaging until you're sure you want to keep the item. This makes returns much easier if needed.

How to Start a Return

Follow these steps to initiate a return:

Contact the Seller

Go to your order details and click "Contact Seller" or "Request Return". Explain why you'd like to return the item.

Wait for Approval

The seller will review your request and respond within 2-3 business days. They may ask for photos if the item is damaged or defective.

Ship the Item Back

Once approved, pack the item securely and ship it to the address provided by the seller. Use a trackable shipping method.

Receive Your Refund

After the seller receives and inspects the return, your refund will be processed within 5-7 business days.

Refund Information

Refund Timeline

  • Refunds are issued after the seller receives and approves the returned item
  • Processing time: 3-5 business days after approval
  • Bank/card processing: Additional 5-10 business days depending on your financial institution

Refund Methods

  • Credit/Debit Card: Refunded to the original card used
  • Gift Card: Refunded to a new or existing gift card balance
  • PayPal: Refunded to your PayPal account

Partial Refunds

You may receive a partial refund if:

  • The item shows signs of use or wear
  • Tags or original packaging are missing
  • Only part of a bundle or set is being returned
  • The seller's policy specifies a restocking fee

Non-Returnable Items

The following items typically cannot be returned:

Custom & Personalized

Items made specifically for you using buyer-entered personalization fields or custom details agreed with the seller.

Food & Consumables

Perishable items, opened food products, or items with a limited shelf life.

Final Sale Items

Items marked as "Final Sale" or deeply discounted clearance items.

Always check the individual product listing for the seller's specific return policy before purchasing.

Resolving Disputes

If you and the seller can't reach an agreement, our support team is here to help:

  1. Document everything — Save all messages with the seller and take photos of the item if there's an issue.
  2. Contact Support — Reach out to us with your order number and a description of the issue.
  3. We'll mediate — Our team will review the case and work with both parties to find a fair resolution.
