Seller Requirements

406 Makers is Montana's premier marketplace for handcrafted and locally-made goods. To maintain the quality and authenticity of our marketplace, we have specific requirements for sellers.

Who Can Sell

  • Montana-based artisans: You must create, design, or significantly transform products in Montana
  • Handmade goods: Items should be handcrafted, not mass-produced
  • Original designs: Products should be your own creation or significantly customized
  • Legal business: You must be able to legally conduct business in the US

What You'll Need

Valid ID

Government-issued identification for identity verification

Bank Account

US bank account for receiving payouts

Tax Information

SSN or EIN for tax reporting (1099-K)

Product Photos

High-quality images of your products

Application Process

Ready to join Montana's maker community? Here's how:

Create an Account

Sign up for a free 406 Makers account if you don't have one already.

Apply to Sell

Click "Become a Seller" and complete the application. Tell us about your craft, products, and Montana connection.

Review Period

Our team reviews applications within 1-3 business days. We may reach out with questions about your products.

Get Approved

Once approved, you can publish listings and start accepting orders. While you wait, you can still set up your shop profile and draft products.

Setting Up Your Shop

You can set up your shop immediately after creating your seller account. A complete, well-branded shop builds trust with buyers.

Shop Profile Checklist

  • Business name: Choose a memorable, searchable name
  • Logo: Upload a square logo (at least 400x400px)
  • About section: Tell your story and Montana connection
  • Shop policies: Set shipping, returns, and custom order policies
  • Contact info: Add your business email and location

Connect Payment

Set up Stripe Connect to receive payouts. You can publish listings before connecting Stripe. You'll need:

  • Bank account and routing numbers
  • Social Security Number or EIN
  • Business address

Tip: Complete your shop profile before listing products. A professional-looking shop converts browsers into buyers.

Creating Your First Listing

Great listings lead to sales. Here's how to create one that stands out:

Photos

  • Use natural lighting when possible
  • Include multiple angles (front, back, detail shots)
  • Show scale — include a hand or common object for reference
  • Use a clean, uncluttered background
  • Minimum 1000x1000px resolution

Title & Description

  • Use descriptive keywords buyers search for
  • Include materials, dimensions, and colors
  • Tell the story behind the piece
  • Mention care instructions if applicable

Pricing

  • Research similar items to price competitively
  • Factor in materials, time, and shipping costs
  • Consider offering variations at different price points
